Stopping off in Los Angeles on the way back from Australia for a family visit, Ian worked with former student Mitch Johnson and UCLA student Leo Wall to sample a Diadema relative, Centrostephanus coronatus off Santa Catalina Island. This is a site which Ian visited while a graduate student in 2001-2003 at the nearby Wrigley Institute for Marine Sciences. We sampled 10 urchins, dissecting them on the beach, to understand their normal microbiomes ahead of disease.
