Cornell Oceans

Who we are

Cornell Oceans is an inter-department consortium of researchers from across the Cornell campus who collectively study the biology, chemistry, physics, geology, social science, policy and culture of the oceans.

What we do

Cornell Oceans provides training of undergraduate and graduate students through academic programs, coursework, and research experiences spanning a wide range of academic units. Cornell Oceans also supports faculty by promoting exchange and collaboration among its members.

How we are doing it

-Annual Cornell Oceans symposium to provide opportunities to share research findings, network, and brainstorm strategic direction. The first symposium took place in May 2025, and we are excited to continue with our second symposium in May 2026!

-Coordinated seminar sequence of marine speakers – an opportunity to learn about cutting edge marine work. The first seminar by Dr. Kaitln Reinl took place in April 2026. If you’d like to invite a marine seminar speaker to your department, please reach out as we can provide financial support!

-Strategic hiring to fulfill key gaps in the undergraduate marine studies curriculum, and provide research experience for undergraduates. The first of these was in Oceanography of a Changing Planet – we are thrilled to welcome Dr. Una Miller into Earth and Atmospheric Science! Stay tuned for additional opportunities in Marine Ecology and more.

-Enhanced graduate training opportunities, including a Cornell Oceans journal club and grant writing workshop

-Regular informal meetups to facilitate exchange of research ideas and provide mutual support for graduate students, postdocs, professional staff, and faculty.

-Advocacy for ocean-specific field-based research endeavors from Cornell’s Ithaca NY campus
