St Thomas USVI Time Series April 2026

Continuing our time series of Diadema and its parasite DaScPc, Ian traveled to St Thomas to work with Mike Henson (NIU) and collaborators at the University of the Virgin Islands to continue sampling of urchins and sympatric reservoirs in concert with biological oceanographic phenomenon. After wiping out urchins in early January, the size distribution and abundance of urchins was greatly depressed. We also sampled at two other sites around the island – and, unexpectedly, came across more scuticociliatosis at the eastern end of the island. Some clues as to its drivers came from reports that precipitation was heavy in the week before the event. We also performed an additional challenge experiment to see if the ciliate isolated in January 2026 was infective.
