Ian traveled as invited presenter and educator to the Sea and Learn Foundation’s annual ocean outreach week, in Saba, Caribbean Netherlands. After flying to Sint Maarten, he boarded the twin otter flight down to Saba – a tiny volcanic speck about 15 minutes flying south, and with the world’s shortest international runway (400m). After a harrowing landing on the top of cliffs, he then participated in 3 days of outreach, including an activity aimed at elementary school children (building Winogradsky columns), and an adult activity to detect DaScPc on coral surfaces with members of the public. He also hiked up Mt Scenery – 1010 steps to the top of a 700m volcanic caldera (extinct!), which when combined with hiking 150m up and down from his accommodation (El Momo Cottages) to town (Windwardside) meant for a lot of aerobic activity! He also met Paul Sikkel (RSMAS) who works on Gnathid parasites of fish. On the final night, he gave a seminar on Diadema scuticociliatosis in an outdoor venue – a first!
